The extent of climate zones is approximate, and varies according to prevailing weather patterns. For example, if westerly Atlantic weather paterns blow across the whole of France, most of the country will expreience oceanic weather conditions. Conversely, if an area of continental high pressure lies over France, virtually the whole country can experience "continental" weather, with intense dry heat in summer, and sharp dry cold in winter, sometimes right down to the Mediterranean coast. This happened quite remarkably in February 2012, when temperatures down to minus 20° celsius prevailed for almost two weeks, virtually throughout France, including the southwest.
