Orleans
(Loiret)
to Le Lioran (Saint Amand-Montrond)
Day
10 ,Tuesday 9th May..in the
Centre–Val-de-Loire
region.takes riders from the Loire valley at Orleans, to the small town
of Saint Amand-Montrond on the river Cher, recognised as the
geographical centre of
mainland France.
This is a genuinely flat stage, with
only a few small climbs along the way. It will take riders close to
some
oif the finest of the
Loire
Chateaux, notably Chambord, where Leonardo
da Vinci once lived and worked, and through an area of woodland and
lakes known as the Sologne, once prized royal hunting grounds. After
the Sologne, the route passes through the small town of Vierzon, before
heading out across one of the great
agricultural areas of France, to Issoudun, before returning towards the
Cher valley for the final part of the route as far
as Saint Amand.
Among noteworthy sites in the area that
are not on the route of the Tour de France are several Loire châteaux,
notably Chambord, Blois and Chenonceux, and the magnificent medieval
cathedral in Bourges, that many people consider to be finer than Notre
Dame in Paris. Like Notre Dame de Paris, Bougrges cathedral has some
magnificent
medieval
stained glass windows.
